"indefinite" due date

I encountered a book in CLIO that was listed as due date "indefinite." I learned from Michael that that means the book is checked out to Interlibrary Loan. Now I know, and so do you!

Science Libraries update

From Jane Winland:

When a patron is searching a title in CLIO that is from one of the four closed Science Libraries, they will see a message that tells them that the library is closed and to use the Recall/Other Requests key. They should then go to the "Science Collections Paging Service" option and fill out the request form. We will be paging books from these libraries daily, Monday-Friday and material will be held for patrons in Engineering.

Further to Jenna's comment on the refdesk blog about stable URLs for CLIO records, which she spotted in Inside CUL, I talked about that at the OPAC meeting yesterday, and Sarah Witte pointed out that she uses them herself in some of her Women's Studies guides.
There are some on this page - http://www.columbia.edu/cu/lweb/eguides/womenstudies/ushist.html.
Sarah also put a guide to generating them on Swift - it's at http://www.columbia.edu/cu/libraries/inside/projects/voyageropac/generate.html.
Basically, you use the URL
http://clio.cul.columbia.edu/cgi-bin/Pwebrecon.cgi?BBID=###### where ###### is the Voyager Bib key for the item. (BBID=###### is BBID then an equals sign followed by the Voyager Bib key.)
The Voyager Bib key is the six or seven digit numeral in the 001 field in the MARC record.

This seems like a good thing to do in our guides when we put references to books - I'm sure I knew about it, but had completely forgotten!

CLIO durable links?!

In the current Inside CUL, there are what appear to be durable links to CLIO, using item call numbers, which is to me kind of pretty exciting. See the New Acquisitions: July-October 2008 article for evidence.

From Gary Bertchume at CUL:

The computer hardware that CLIO runs on is being upgraded this weekend. The work will begin tonight at 9 pm after library service desks close. During the down time the following service conditions will be in effect:
We anticipate completing the changeover on Saturday and having everything running on the new hardware by start of business on Sunday.

Dewey no more

We have completed retrospective conversion and reclassification. Barnard has no more Dewey books. Please give a copy of any CLIO record showing Dewey holdings for Barnard to Albert or to Michael so that he can suppress the record.

Readex Serial Set--Subject Headings

The Readex online version of the U.S. Congressional Serial Set currently covers 1817-1942. MARC records are being added in batches to CLIO, and at the moment these records go up through 1890.

At this point, I thought it might be useful to say a few words about the subject headings used in the Readex Serial Set, since these are the same as the headings used in the MARC records for it in CLIO. Readex's subject headings differ substantially from LCSH. (In the CLIO subject headings browse lists, the Readex headings will be described as "General heading[s].")

One reasonably consistent difference between the Readex headings and LCSH is that the Readex headings usually omit any reference to "United States" or "North America."

For example, consider the following headings used in the record copied at the end of this message:

Readex heading: Boundaries
comparable LCSH: United States--Boundaries

Readex heading: Indian Removal
comparable LCSH: Indians of North America--Relocation

The Readex Serial Set itself provides many options for browsing its subject headings. You may find it easiest to go there directly if you are having difficulty identifying relevant subject headings in CLIO. The aim of the folks at Readex was to describe the contents of the Serial Set publications with maximal precision; and their subject headings diverge from LCSH in a wide variety of ways.

If people have any questions about the Readex Serial Set or would like to schedule a demo / question & answer session, please let me know. I would be glad to provide one.

Anglo-American History & Literature Librarian

catalog record error reporting

If you ever find a typo or misspelling in CLIO and think the world at large would be better for having it fixed (i.e. have the record corrected in OCLC, as well as in CLIO), please write to clio-error@columbia.edu. (That alias goes to Dave Motson and Kate Harcourt, if you're curious.)

CLIO RECORDS IN ALL UPPER CASE CHARACTERS

Posted to CUL Notes by Ilona Bicsak:

Staff and patrons may begin to see brief records in CLIO in all upper case characters representing recently published materials. As an example, please see “VISUAL OBJECT OF DESIRE IN LATE MEDIEVAL ENGLAND (Bib ID 6326362)

These are brief bibliographic records for recently ordered monographs using GOBI - the ordering database of our new primary domestic monograph vendor, YBP.

Sometimes referred to as EOCR’s (Electronic Order Confirmation Records) they are batch loaded into CLIO and will be replaced by standard cataloging records (mostly supplied by YBP) when the ordered book is received at Columbia. These records should not be confused with the OTF (On the Fly) or unlinked item records created for circulation purposes when we used NOTIS.

Please feel free to contact any MPS supervisor for questions related to these order records.

Static CLIO Sunday

CLIO will be "read only" for much of Sunday so that we can perform an indexing upgrade. The OPAC will be available but users will not be able to log in and perform circulation-related activities such as renewals or recalls. Borrow Direct and Offsite requests will not be affected. Health Sciences is the only unit open on Sunday and they have been alerted.
